Frequently asked questions

Answers to all of your questions about SF-50.

How long does it take?

That depends on several factors. Usually we process your request the same day in our office and submit it to the government the next business day. Most requests are fulfilled within 10-15 business days. You will receive a scanned copy of your SF-50 by email.

How is FedRecord.org more convenient than requesting my SF-50 directly from the National Archives?

For one, you aren’t required to download, print, sign, and mail your request. You can submit your order directly through our website with the ease of e-signature technology from a desktop, laptop, or mobile device. Instead of your request trickling through the government’s large call center, we physically stand in line at the records repository and manually coordinate your order. Tracking your request through us is easy, whereas tracking your request through the government is difficult and frustrating; expect long hold times and inconclusive answers.

Can’t I get my SF-50 for free?

Yes, you can get one for free directly from the government. You can get more information by calling the National Archives.

Why should I pay this fee to you to get a SF-50?

Our process is easier and faster than dealing directly with the government. We physically stand in line, so you don’t have to. By working with an expeditor like us, your request is hand-submitted at the counter instead of the government’s large call center. Our clients want to avoid the headache of long hold times and unpredictable turnarounds.

Is the fee refundable if you aren’t able to find the SF-50 I requested?

Do It Yourself Refunds: All sales are final. No refunds. Our service is complete instantly at the time of payment whereby you receive the properly formatted request document to sign and mail yourself.

Full Service Refunds: You may request a refund within 24 hours of your Full Service purchase for any reason and receive one. Thereafter, refunds will be considered only if the document is not returned to the client more than seven days after the estimated return date as specified in the FAQs. Refunds will not be issued in the event that a government agency provides written notice that there is no record of military service.
